“Books Are More Precious Than Gold”

NOW YOU’LL KNOW YOUR ABC’S
I remember as a child when I had to learn the alphabet, I stumbled my atonal and off-key way through the ABCDEFG song, suffered the endless rote repitition, and came to the startling realization that for the very first time learning was not just boring but incomprehensible as to the reason behind it all. For most school-age kids learning the alphabet is the very first brush with outside authority from beyond the family, the first time someone not only tells you to do something this way and only this way but doesn't really give you any sort of reason beyond this is what you do. In a way it is the first intellectual mystery of life.
